*Pre-order of Himalayan Mulberry Budwood ship in Dec./Jan. and June/July.* This is the famously delicious “Himalayan” mulberry from the Fruit and Spice Park. Eating from this tree in ~2013 opened my eyes to the diversity of flavor in mulberry and just how wonderful some can taste. Our good friend Craig Hepworth (Florida Fruit Geek) and I have shared a mutual excitement about this clone since that time. Craig had the wisdom to add FSP to the name to differentiate this variety from other types of Morus macroura that can generally all be called “Himalayan”. This is one of the best mulberries I’ve ever tasted, if not the overall best. For more thorough info on the flavor of this unique variety, you can investigate Craig’s page to read more. These are an extremely high quality berry! Himalayan FSP must be grafted, as it roots poorly from cuttings and is highly susceptible to root knot nematodes. Craig and myself have both experienced terrible tree performance on it’s own roots, eventually followed by total tree death. Fortunately, when grafted to a good rootstock like “Tice”, it can be a vigorous and productive tree. A video on chip bud grafting mulberry can be found on our youtube channel. Unlike Skinner mulberry, this tree is not precocious. As a small tree, it is shy to bear or may bear nothing at all. Mature trees show high productivity. There is much to be learned about cultivating this tree in different areas of the state of Florida. This order includes 5 pieces of budwood, mostly of a larger diameter to be used for chip budding. Cuttings will have a minimum of 3 buds, giving at least 15 opportunities for a successful graft.
