This plant is a vigorous, sprawling ground cover that makes edible leafy greens. They are primarily enjoyed cooked but some people eat them raw. We particularly enjoy cooking the new shoots, stem and all. The leaves are highly nutritious and the name is a reference to the belief that it has life extending qualities. This plant bears the distinction of being the only perennial leafy green we know of that has high quality greens every day of the year in Florida, provided it isn’t exposed to frost which it is very sensitive to. This is a highly adaptable plant that makes a nice cover under newly planted fruit trees. It has proven to be a reliable vegetable crop for thousands of Florida gardeners.
