Puerto Rican Brown Cowpea

$27.54 $45.17
This cowpea is another great contribution from Florida fruit enthusiast Crafton Clift.  One bean volunteered in his garden in Puerto Rican and made thousands of seeds, some of which made their way back to Florida.  Like the PR black cowpea, this variety is also resistant to the cowpea curculio pest.  We find it intriguing that two varieties from Puerto Rico both have this unique trait.  This is a vigorous, climbing variety that is highly productive.  Flowering and pod production take place in the Fall due to daylength sensitivity.  Long pods often contain more than 15 seeds.  Young pods are somewhat tender and may be an acceptable snap bean.  It can be shelled and consumed at the unripe “pea” stage or allowed to dry down into dry beans.  Greens of all Vigna unguiculata varieties can be cooked and eaten.  The beans of this variety mold easily as they are drying down if they are rained on. This listing is for ~20 seeds. Vigna unguiculata.
